Paper-Abstract (Original)
Behavioral studies in non-human primates have become ideal models for further investigations into advanced cognitive function in humans. To date, there is no systematic ethogram of the cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis) in a free enclosure. In a field observation of 6012 subjects, 107 distinct behaviors of M. fascicularis were preliminarily described. 83 of these behaviors were then independently validated through a randomized cohort and classified into 12 behavioral categories. 53 of these behaviors were then selected to accurately reflect the daily mundane activity of the species in a free enclosure. These findings systematically document the behavior of M. fascicularis in a free enclosure for use in further investigations.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a debilitating psychiatric mood disorder that affects millions of individuals globally. Our understanding of the biological basis of MDD is poor, and current treatments are ineffective in a significant proportion of cases. This current situation may relate to the dominant rodent animal models of depression, which possess translational limitations due to limited homologies with humans. Therefore, a more homologous primate model of depression is needed to advance investigation into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying depression and to conduct pre-clinical therapeutic trials. Here, we report two convenient methods--social isolation and social plus visual isolation--which can be applied to construct a non-human primate model of depression in the adult female cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis). Both social and social plus visual isolation were shown to be effective in inducing depression-like behavior by significantly reducing socially dominant aggressive conflict behavior, communicative behavior, sexual behavior, and parental behavior. The addition of visual isolation produced more profound behavioral changes than social isolation alone by further reducing parental behavior and sexual behavior. Thus, the degree of behavioral pathology may be manipulated by the degree of isolation. These methods can be applied to construct a non-human primate model of depression in order to assess physiological, behavioral, and social phenomena in a controlled laboratory setting.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Objective To assess the influence of infant rearing on the behavior of depressed adult female Macaca fascicularis and the influence of depressed infant-rearing adult female Macaca fascicularis on their infants in a free enclosure environment. Methods Here, 20 depressed subjects and then 20 healthy subjects were randomly selected from a total population of 1007 adult female Macaca fascicularis subjects. Four depressed subjects and eight healthy subjects were rearing infants. By focal observation, three trained observers video-recorded the selected subjects over a total observational period of 560 hours. The video footage was analyzed by qualified blinded analysts that coded the raw footage into quantitative behavioral data (i.e., durations of 53 pre-defined behavioral items across 12 behavioral categories) for statistical analysis. Results Between infant-rearing and non-rearing healthy subjects, ten differential behaviors distributed across five behavioral categories were identified. Between infant-rearing and non-rearing depressed subjects, nine behaviors distributed across five behavioral categories were identified. Between infant-rearing healthy and infant-rearing depressed subjects, fifteen behaviors distributed across six behavioral categories were identified. Conclusion Infant-rearing depressed adult female Macaca fascicularis subjects may have a worse psychological status as compared to non-rearing depressed counterparts. Infant rearing may negatively influence depressed Macaca fascicularis mothers. Infant-rearing depressed subjects were less adequate at raising infants as compared to infant-rearing healthy subjects. Thus, maternal depression in this macaque species may negatively impact infatile development, which is consistent with previous findings in humans.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Rodent models have dominated preclinical investigations into the mechanisms of depression. However, these models-which rely on subjecting individual rodents to physical stressors - do not realistically resemble the etiopathological development of depression, which occurs naturally in a social context. A non-human primate model that better reflects the social ethological aspects of depression would be more advantageous to investigating pathophysiological mechanisms and developing antidepressant therapeutics. Here, we describe and model a naturally-occurring depressive state in a non-human primate species, the cynomolgus monkey (Macaca fascicularis), in a realistic social ethological context and associate the depressed behavioral phenotype with significant serum metabolic perturbations. One to two subjects per stable social colony (17-22 subjects) manifested a depressive phenotype that may be attributed to psychosocial stress. In accordance with rodent and human studies, the serum metabolic phenotype of depressed and healthy subjects significantly differed, supporting the model's face validity. However, application of the fast-acting antidepressant ketamine failed to demonstrate predictive validity. This study proposes a non-human primate depression model in a realistic social ethological context that can better approximate the psychosocial stressors underlying depression.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Background Recent depression research has revealed a growing awareness of how to best classify depression into depressive subtypes. Appropriately subtyping depression can lead to identification of subtypes that are more responsive to current pharmacological treatment and aid in separating out depressed patients in which current antidepressants are not particularly effective. Differential co-expression analysis (DCEA) and differential regulation analysis (DRA) were applied to compare the transcriptomic profiles of peripheral blood lymphocytes from patients with two depressive subtypes: major depressive disorder (MDD) and subsyndromal symptomatic depression (SSD). Results Six differentially regulated genes (DRGs) (FOSL1, SRF, JUN, TFAP4, SOX9, and HLF) and 16 transcription factor-to-target differentially co-expressed gene links or pairs (TF2target DCLs) appear to be the key differential factors in MDD; in contrast, one DRG (PATZ1) and eight TF2target DCLs appear to be the key differential factors in SSD. There was no overlap between the MDD target genes and SSD target genes. Venlafaxine (Efexor™, Effexor™) appears to have a significant effect on the gene expression profile of MDD patients but no significant effect on the gene expression profile of SSD patients. Conclusion DCEA and DRA revealed no apparent similarities between the differential regulatory processes underlying MDD and SSD. This bioinformatic analysis may provide novel insights that can support future antidepressant R&D efforts.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Background Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that affects many people every year. Deep brain stimulation (DBS) is an effective nonpharmacological method to treat PD motor symptoms. This meta-analysis was conducted to evaluate the efficacy of subthalamic nucleus (STN)-DBS versus globus pallidus internus (GPi)-DBS in treating advanced PD. Methods Controlled clinical trials that compared STN-DBS to GPi-DBS for short-term treatment of PD in adults were researched up to November 2015. The primary outcomes were the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Scale Section (UPDRS) III score and the levodopa-equivalent dosage (LED) after DBS. The secondary outcomes were the UPDRS II score and the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) score. Results Totally, 13 studies containing 1,148 PD patients were included in this meta-analysis to compare STN-DBS versus GPi-DBS. During the off-medication state, the pooled weighted mean difference (WMD) of UPDRS III and II scores were -2.18 (95% CI =-5.11 to 0.74) and -1.96 (95% CI =-3.84 to -0.08), respectively. During the on-medication state, the pooled WMD of UPDRS III and II scores were 0.15 (95% CI =-1.14 to 1.44) and 1.01 (95% CI =0.12 to 1.89), respectively. After DBS, the pooled WMD of LED and BDI were -254.48 (95% CI =-341.66) and 2.29 (95% CI =0.83 to 3.75), respectively. Conclusion These results indicate that during the off-medication state, the STN-DBS might be superior to GPi-DBS in improving the motor function and activities of daily living for PD patients; but during the on-medication state, the opposite result is observed. Meanwhile, the STN-DBS is superior at reducing the LED, whereas the GPi-DBS shows a significantly greater reduction in BDI score after DBS.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Unresectable advanced pancreatic cancer (APC) is a highly lethal malignancy. Although numerous chemotherapeutic regimens are available, evidence regarding the survival extension, the life quality improvement, the associated risks and occurrence rates of adverse effects, is required. The effects of 19 chemotherapy regimens on survival and treatment‑associated toxicities in the context of APC treatment were comparatively assessed. A total of 23 randomized controlled trials were included in this network meta‑analysis. For overall survival, five regimens, Gemcitabine (Gem)+radiotherapy (Radio), Gem+cisplatin (Cis), Gem+erlotinib (Erl)+bevacizumab (Bev), Gem+capecitabine (Cap)+Erl, and Gem+exatecan, were the most effective treatments, according to their respective high surface under the cumulative ranking (SUCRA) probabilities. Regarding the progression‑free survival, five regimens, including Gem+Radio, Gem+Erl+Bev, Gem+Cis, Gem+Cap+Erl and Gem+pemetrexed, were the most effective treatments based on their SUCRA probabilities. Each regimen exhibited advantages and disadvantages, and 14 common treatment‑associated toxicities were present in different proportions. The three principal toxic effects included haematological, gastrointestinal and constitutional symptoms. To improve survival, chemotherapy regimens with high SUCRA probabilities require prioritizing. Although treatment‑associated toxicities are unavoidable, the regimens presented toxicities in distinct proportions. Therefore, clinicians should assess the disease status of the patients, and balance the benefits and risks of the selected treatment.

The physical significance of acoustic parameters and its clinical significance of dysarthria in Parkinson's disease.
Eintrag P0217 · CV-Jahr 2020 · Datumsgrundlage epub. Daten werden mit der verfügbaren Genauigkeit (Jahr/Monat/Tag) angezeigt.
Paper-Abstract (Original)
Dysarthria is universal in Parkinson's disease (PD) during disease progression; however, the quality of vocalization changes is often ignored. Furthermore, the role of changes in the acoustic parameters of phonation in PD patients remains unclear. We recruited 35 PD patients and 26 healthy controls to perform single, double, and multiple syllable tests. A logistic regression was performed to differentiate between protective and risk factors among the acoustic parameters. The results indicated that the mean f0, max f0, min f0, jitter, duration of speech and median intensity of speaking for the PD patients were significantly different from those of the healthy controls. These results reveal some promising indicators of dysarthric symptoms consisting of acoustic parameters, and they strengthen our understanding about the significance of changes in phonation by PD patients, which may accelerate the discovery of novel PD biomarkers.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Fecal samples can easily be collected and are representative of a person's current health state; therefore, the demand for routine fecal examination has increased sharply. However, manual operation may pollute the samples, and low efficiency limits the general examination speed; therefore, automatic analysis is needed. Nevertheless, recognition exhaustion time and accuracy remain major challenges in automatic testing. Here, we introduce a fast and efficient cell-detection algorithm based on the Faster-R-CNN technique: the Resnet-152 convolutional neural network architecture. Additionally, a region proposal network and a network combined with principal component analysis are proposed for cell location and recognition in microscopic images. Our algorithm achieved a mean average precision of 84% and a 723 ms detection time per sample for 40,560 fecal images. Thus, this approach may provide a solid theoretical basis for real-time detection in routine clinical examinations while accelerating the process to satisfy increasing demand.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Introduction Parkinson's (PD) is a common degenerative disease of the central nervous system. It affects more than 6 million individuals worldwide. The typical clinical manifestations include static tremor, slow movement, and unstable posture. However, the correlation between head tremor and the severity of PD remains unclear. Methods In the current study, 18 patients and 18 healthy subjects were recruited to undergo a phonation test. Noldus facereader 7.0 software was used to analyze the range of head trembling between the two groups. Results The data revealed that patients with PD had significant differences in the x-, y-, and z-axis of head movement with respect to the specific pronunciation syllables compared with the normal group. Moreover, the head movement of the patients with PD was positively correlated with the severity of the disease in the single, double, and multiple syllable tests. In the phonetic test, the head displacement of patients with PD was significantly greater than that of healthy individuals, and the displacement range was positively correlated with the severity of the disease. Conclusion These pieces of evidence suggested that the measurement of head displacement assists the early diagnosis and severity of the disease.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Objective This study aimed to compare the sensitivity and specificity of diagnosis between the third heart sound (S3) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) in heart failure (HF). Methods Relevant studies were searched in PubMed, SinoMed, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and the Cochrane Trial Register until February 20, 2022. The sensitivity, specificity, likelihood ratio (LR), and diagnostic odds ratio (DOR) were pooled. The symmetric receiver operator characteristic curve (SROC) and Fagan's nomogram were drawn. The source of heterogeneity was explored by meta-regression and subgroup analysis. Results A total of 19 studies, involving 5,614 participants, were included. The combined sensitivity of S3 was 0.23 [95% confidence interval (CI) (0.15-0.33), specificity was 0.94 [95% CI (0.82-0.98)], area under the SROC curve was 0.49, and the DOR was 4.55; while the sensitivity of LVEF was 0.70 [95% CI (0.53-0.83)], specificity was 0.79 [95% CI (0.75-0.82)], area under the SROC curve was 0.79, and the DOR was 8.64. No publication bias was detected in Deeks' funnel plot. The prospective design, partial verification bias, and blind contributed to the heterogeneity in specificity, while adequate description of study participants contributed to the heterogeneity in sensitivity. In Fagan's nomogram, the post-test probability was 48% when the pre-test probability was set as 20%, while in LVEF, the post-test probability was 45% when the pre-test probability was set as 20%. Conclusion The use of S3 alone presented lower sensitivity in diagnosing HF compared with LVEF, whereas it was useful in early pathological assessment.

Pancreatic cancer is a rare but fatal disease. Patients present advanced disease due to the lack of or typical symptoms when the tumor is still localized. A high-quality image processing system has been in practice to detect the pancreatic tumor and determine the possibility of surgery, and preoperative methods, such as ERCP are increasingly used to complement the staging modality. Pancreaticoduodenectomy is one of the complicated surgeries with potential morbidity. The minimally invasive pancreatic resections, both robot-assisted and laparoscopic, have become a part of standard surgical practice worldwide over the last decade. Moreover, advancements in adjuvant chemotherapy have improved the long-term outcomes in current clinical practice. The systemic conservative treatment, including targeted agents, remains the mainstay of treatment for patients with advanced disease. An increasing number of studies are focused on modulating the pancreatic tumor microenvironment to improve the efficacy of the immunotherapeutic strategies. Herein, the role of preoperative therapy, the novel surgical strategy, and individualized systemic treatment in pancreatic cancer is investigated. Also, the randomized controlled studies that have defined the neoadjuvant and surgical management of pancreatic cancer have been summarized.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Aims Sleep deprivation (SD) has become a health problem in modern society due to its adverse effects on different aspects. However, the relationship between sleep and cardiovascular system function remains unclear. Here we explored the changes occurring in the brain and the heart sounds after SD. Methods Ninety healthy adult men were recruited and subjected to 36 h of Sleep Deprivation (SD). They participated in a number of tests, including measurements of the heart sound, blood oxygen, and heart rate every 2 h. By using of principal component analysis to reduced the dimensionality of heart sound data. While the ALFF and ReHo indexes were measured via fMRI before and after SD. Correlation and regression analyses were used to reveal the relationship between fMRI and heart sound changes due to SD. Results In this study, there were no abnormal values in the heart rate and blood oxygen during 36 h of SD, whereas the intensity of heart sounds fluctuated significantly increased and decreased. The ALFF was increased in bilateral pericalcarine(Calcarine), left anterior cuneus, (Precuneus_L), right superior temporal gyrus(Temporal_Sup_R), left supplementary motor area (Supp_Motor_Area_L); However, it was reduced in the right medial superior frontal gyrus (Frontal_Sup_Medial_R), right dorsolateral superior frontal gyrus (Frontal_Sup_R) and left medial frontal gyrus (Frontal_Mid_L). The regression analysis uncovered that the intensity of the heart sound in the systole, s1, and s2 phase could be explained by Calcarine_L changes. Conclusion Acute sleep deprivation affects cardiac-brain axis and the specific brain regions. Calcarine_L changes during sleep deprivation are involved in regulating heart contractions.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Heart sound detection technology plays an important role in the prediction of cardiovascular disease, but the most significant heart sounds are fleeting and may be imperceptible. Hence, obtaining heart sound information in an efficient and accurate manner will be helpful for the prediction and diagnosis of heart disease. To obtain heart sound information, we designed an audio data analysis tool to segment the heart sounds from single heart cycle, and validated the heart rate using a finger oxygen meter. The results from our validated technique could be used to realize heart sound segmentation. Our robust algorithmic platform was able to segment the heart sounds, which could then be compared in terms of their difference from the background. A combination of an electronic stethoscope and artificial intelligence technology was used for the digital collection of heart sounds and the intelligent identification of the first (S1) and second (S2) heart sounds. Our approach can provide an objective basis for the auscultation of heart sounds and visual display of heart sounds and murmurs.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Background Sleep deprivation(SD) is known to impair cognitive function and emotional regulation, however, its specific effects on the functional connectivity of visual-related brain regions remain unclear. Objectives This study aimed to investigate the impact of 36-h acute sleep deprivation on functional connectivity in visual neural circuits and its relationship with cognitive and emotional changes. Methods Sixty healthy male participants were assessed before and after 36 h of sleep deprivation using resting-state fMRI, the Psychomotor Vigilance Task (PVT), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and the Profile of Mood States (POMS). Functional connectivity changes were analyzed using paired t-tests and False Discovery Rate (FDR) correction. Key results Sleep deprivation significantly altered functional connectivity between the prefrontal cortex, hippocampus, and visual processing regions. These changes correlated with slower PVT reaction times, increased subjective sleepiness (ESS), and emotional disturbances (POMS), including heightened tension and reduced self-esteem. Conclusions The findings suggest that acute sleep deprivation impairs cognitive performance and emotional regulation by changing functional connectivity in key brain regions. These results may strengthen our understanding of neurobiology of SD and its potential negative effects.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Infant cries serve as critical indicators of an infant's physiological and psychological states, holding essential clinical value in distinguishing between normal and pathological conditions during early development. However, most studies on infant cries failed to segment between inhalation and exhalation during the crying analysis because segmentation remains great challenge. Therefore, we developed an audio data analysis tool capable of accurately segmenting inhalation and exhalation phases in infant cries, followed by extraction of the duration, frequency, and intensity parameters of each segment. Here, 226 sound clips of infants' cries were collected and analyzed. The results revealed the significant differences in sound parameters between premature and term infants. The whole process allows automatic identification and digital collection of infant cries, and it provides an objective method to evaluate the significance behind the cries.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
Background In the field of respiratory system diseases, the utilization of respiratory sounds in auscultation plays a crucial role in the specific disease diagnosis. However, during the process of auscultation, the personal experiences and environmental factors may affect the decision making, leading to diagnostic errors. Therefore, to accurately and effectively obtain and analyze respiratory sounds can be positively contribute to the diagnosis and treatment of respiratory system diseases. Objectives Our aim was to develop an analytical method for the visualization and digitization of respiratory audio data, and to validate its capability to differentiate between various background diseases. Methods This study collected the respiratory sounds of patients admitted to the Department of General Medicine of Shanghai Changhai Hospital from June to December 2023. After strict screening according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 84 patients were included. The research process includes using an electronic stethoscope to collect lung sounds from patients in a quiet environment. The patients expose their chests and lie flat. Sound data are collected at six landmark positions on the chest. The collected audio files are imported into an analysis tool for segmentation and feature extraction. Specific analysis methods include distinguishing heart sounds and respiratory sounds, segmenting respiratory sounds, determining the inspiratory and expiratory phases, and using a tool developed by the team for automatic segmentation encoding. Results We standardized the respiratory sounds of 84 patients and segmented multiple respiratory cycles. Following the localization and segmentation of the respiratory cycles based on label information, we calculated the average and standard deviation of the amplitude features for each segment of the respiratory cycle. The results indicated differences among various diseases. Conclusions The robust algorithm platform is capable of segmenting the respiratory sounds into inhale and exhale phases accordingly, then comparing the difference between different background diseases. This method provides objective evidence for the auscultation of respiratory sounds and visual display of breath sounds.

The impact of different decibels of ambient noise on attention.
Eintrag P0147 · CV-Jahr 2026 · Datumsgrundlage crossref_published-online. Daten werden mit der verfügbaren Genauigkeit (Jahr/Monat/Tag) angezeigt.
Paper-Abstract (Original)
Ambient noise is often perceived as a distractor; however, some individuals may benefit from certain levels of ambient noise to enhance cognitive performance. Despite this, the optimal range of ambient noise for improving attention remains unclear. To disclose this relationship, thirty-eight healthy college students were recruited to perform a 6 ⋅ 6 Schulte grid test under varying ambient noise levels. All participants performed the tasks under three noise conditions presented in a fixed order of increasing intensity (20-40 dB, 40-60 dB, and 60-80 dB). Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) was employed to measure dynamic changes in hemoglobin levels, while facial expressions and physiological signs were also assessed. The findings demonstrated that 40-60 dB group exhibited strongest visual brain functional connectivity. Among the three groups, the 40-60 dB group exhibited the highest values for anger expression, surprise expression, and heart rate (HR) (all p < 0.0001). Additionally, this group showed significantly higher heart rate variability (SDNN) compared to the 60-80 dB group (p < 0.05). The region of interest (ROI) pars triangularis Broca's area left~ pars triangularis Broca's area right revealed a significant difference (P = 0.004). Furthermore, the pairwise post hoc tests revealed the significant differences between the 20-40 dB group and 60-80 dB group (P = 0.007), as well as between the 40-60 dB group and 60-80 dB group (P = 0.017). In conclusion, moderate noise (40-60 dB) appears to induce an optimal level of arousal. In contrast, high-intensity noise (60-80 dB) likely prompts functional reorganization between the bilateral triangular parts of Broca's area to support cognitive control and interference suppression. The moderate intensity of noise may arouse the attention.

Paper-Abstract (Original)
With increasing globalisation and deepening integration of local cultures, a growing number of product advertisements incorporate diverse, mixed cultural elements, designed to attract consumer attention and enhance purchase interest. However, the underlying mechanisms by which visual stimuli successfully influence consumer purchase behaviour remain poorly understood. In the present study, 300 college students aged 18-22 were recruited and randomly assigned to one of three between-subjects experiments (A, B and C), each comparing a control group (n = 50) with an experimental group (n = 50). The experiment employed a single-exposure paradigm, using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) to monitor changes in participant haemoglobin in brain cortical areas. Facial expressions and vital signs were simultaneously recorded in parallel. Based on these measurements, visual stimuli with mixed cultural elements collectively influence consumer decision-making through their intensity characteristics, potentially involving cognitive conflict processing and may be associated with enhanced emotional arousal and modulated autonomic nervous activity. These results provide exploratory evidence for the neural correlates underlying visual strategies in cross-cultural marketing and offer new methodological support for brand design and consumer cognition studies.
